Exfoliative cytology samples of Group A (controls) showed no methylation and all 30 samples were unmethylated (100%), whereas in Group B (OSMF patients), 93.3% were methylated, and 6.7% were unmethylated, which suggests that hypermethylation of p16 is very highly significant in buccal cell samples and is consistent with previous studies.[ 25 26 27 ] Although the unmethylated percent (6.7%) in the buccal cell samples are negligible, it can be attributed to sampling and storage/processing errors.
