The role of the household structure was also found to be highly significant, to the extent that an infectious individual in the same household is almost 100 times more likely to transmit to a susceptible host compared with an infectious person living elsewhere in the village, which explains why so many members of the same families died in close succession [ 28 , 30 , 31 ] ( figure 1 ).
