Fewer anticlinal cell divisions are probably associated with a decreasing trend of annual growth with age (Keunecke et al., 2009 ) but might be also interpreted as “opportunistic strategy” as it is obviously less costly since trees with top dieback produced wood with lower ( t / b ht ) 2 (6L) and thus wood density (Hentschel et al., 2014 ; Rosner et al., 2014 ).
