These observations also have potential consequences for toxicological aspects of nanoparticles, with particular relevance to considerations of toxicity of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, where, for example, lung surfactants and the latherin-related PLUNC proteins of the human oral and upper respiratory tract [25] , [26] , [27] , might be significant in the uptake, tissue penetration, and/or clearance of airborne particles.
