Highly significant differences were seen when comparing plasma from patients with non-infective SIRS and patients with sepsis relative to no-SIRS controls, with the median fd for miRNAs being 2.64 (IQR: 2.10–3.29) and 1.52 (IQR: 1.15–1.92) respectively (p < 0.0001 and n = 116 for each comparison).
