At least two fairly significant and interrelated obstacles remain to be overcome before stem cell-based photoreceptor transplantation can be widely used to treat human retinal disease: the cost of producing transplantable cells and the potential for post-transplantation immunologic injury to the cells and surrounding host tissues.
