It has been suggested that genotoxic damage may also contribute to the formation of common, age-related cataracts and, in that regard, it may be significant that micronuclei, biomarkers of DNA damage, are present in epithelial cells from cataractous lenses. 35 Until recently, however, sequencing methods have lacked the sensitivity to determine directly whether somatic variants are present in the human lens.
