When the eight single‐genotype variants were combined and compared against the WT parental virus treatment, there was a highly significant difference between the two types of virus treatments, that is multiple‐genotype WT vs. single‐genotype variants (treatment: χ 1 2 = 24·81, P < 0·0001), with the slope of the relationship between virus dose and virus‐induced mortality being steeper for the WT virus (log 10 dose × variant: χ 1 2 = 4·66, P = 0·025).
