Though extrahepatic is more common than ICC, the incidence of ICC has increased.[ 3 ] In the United States, the age-adjusted incidence of ICC has increased by 165% from 0.32/100,000 in 1975 to 1979 to 0.85/100,000 in 1995 to 1999.[ 5 6 ] A 2002 analysis based on the mortality data from 22 countries in the World Health Organization databank, reported an increasing trend for mortality from ICC in most countries.[ 7 ] Cholangiocarcinoma poses a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge as it is both rare and nonspecific in clinical presentation.
