In contrast, patients who did not receive amifostine showed a highly significant reduction of the salivary gland function. 59 Treatment with a lower dose of 300 mg/m 2 was shown not to be effective. 60 However, amifostine protection has not been explored further; a likely explanation of this lies in the potential side effects of the substance.
