Figure 4 C demonstrated that, of 14 neurons examined, in all but one neuron the dry responses were much stronger than the responses to the 500 mOsm/L stimuli with highly significant average differences ( Fig. 4 D) between the dry and the HOS responses (respectively, 8.19 ± 0.31 vs. 6.09 ± 0.30 spikes/s; P = 0.0020, paired t -test, 2-tailed), suggesting that the dry responses were produced by the extracellular HOS stimuli whose intensities are greater than 500 mOsm/L (e.g., 600 mOsm/L), as suggested by Figure 3 .
