During 1981–1997, although the annual sediment discharge of the Yangtze River showed a decreasing trend, the period-averaged sediment discharge was relatively high (390 Mt/yr), and the mouth area of the North Branch experienced overall aggradation, with an average accretion rate of 1.6 ± 0.02 cm/yr.
