Vertebral compression fracture Radiation-induced tissue necrosis may be the underlying mechanism leading to vertebral instability and subsequent fracture.[ 15 ] Rates of VCF following spine SBRT are variable, though are higher than traditional rates of approximately 3% for conventional radiotherapy.[ 11 ] The majority of data regarding VCF is in the form of nonrandomized retrospective data, with an evident trend that high doses per fraction result in increased risk.
