Using a WHO-recommended cutoff for obesity for Asian populations (⩾27.5 kg m −2 ; WHO, 2004 ), we found obesity was associated with borderline significant increase in risk of overall gastric adenocarcinoma and significant increase in risk of adenocarcinoma in the cardia.
