According to the results of overall meta-analyses and subgroup analyses by ethnicity, type of disease, HWE, and smoking status, no significant association was found between periodontitis susceptibility and polymorphisms IL-4 -590C/T, -1099T/G, and 70-bp VNTR, with the only exception that, in terms of the IL-4 -590C/T polymorphism, Caucasians with TT genotype showed marginally significant trend toward having periodontitis (TT versus CC: OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 0.99–2.41).
