In both cases, the relationship was highly significant and explained a significant proportion of variation in repeat transcription level (repeat abundance in genome: slope = 0.0239, p = 0.0001, r 2 = 0.59; repeat abundance in methylome: slope = 0.0569, p = 0.0007, r 2 = 0.49), although the variation in repeat expression itself was small (Fig. 4 c, d).
