Therefore, while we are confident that the signal of elevated HIV-1 influenced directional selection at epitope sites that we detected by collectively considering all of these “marginally significant” sites is present in the particular M. tuberculosis data set that we have examined, it would be desirable to validate findings in an independent data set.
