In this case, there is likely to be significant linkage disequilibrium due to the allele frequency differences between populations ( Pritchard and Rosenberg 1999 ), and, also, there is likely to be local natural selection in which alleles that are favored in one population are selected against in the other ( Charlesworth et al. 1997 ), and vice-versa.
We discuss the significance of these findings in terms of biological examples of viability and fecundity selection, and speculate that the effect may be significant when factors such as gene migration maintain a degree of linkage disequilibrium.
