Functional annotation analysis revealed a highly significant enrichment for placental phenotypes and pathways, including cell migration, PDGF signalling pathway that maintains the placental haematopoietic niche 30 , as well as genes controlling spongiotrophoblast and labyrinth development and morphology (Fig. 3A ).
