A concerted effort by the government to expand the primary health care system and emphasize on preventive, promotive and basic curative health services resulted in a positive improvements in the health coverage and utilization; and consequently, maternal mortality ratio has shown a decreasing trend from the year 2000 estimate of 871 deaths per 100,000 live births to 412 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2016; and between 2000 and 2016, infant mortality has declined from 97 deaths per 1000 live births to 48 deaths per 1000 live births and under-five mortality from 166 deaths per 1000 live births to 67 deaths per 1000 live births [ 1 , 10 ].
