Even though there was a highly significant positive correlation between the abundance of species common to both sites (considering only species observed in transects at both sites; r = 0.95, p ≪ 0.001, n = 26 species), a paired Student’s t -test indicated that mean abundance was significantly greater at Barú than at Varadero (mean difference = 0.78, t = − 2.51, p = 0.019).
