Based on highly significant activation of Caspase-8 (about 17-fold with respect to untreated cells), we hypothesized that apoptosis was initiated by the death-receptor (extrinsic) pathway leading to caspase cascade activation, where downstream effectors Caspase-3 and -7 cleave protein targets involved in cell death.
