Nine studies reported that a worse dental status was associated with cognitive decline ([ 22 , 25 , 27 – 29 , 32 , 33 ], one study showed a borderline significance of the association [ 31 ]), three studies reported no significant association [ 24 , 26 , 30 ], and one reported a negative association, i.e., more missing teeth was associated with a lower risk of dementia [ 21 ].
