25–28 For example, a meta-analysis in 2009 revealed that although the higher risk of all-cause mortality in the final pooled analysis was marginally non-significant in patients with POAG (relative risk (RR) 1.13, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.31), a pooled analysis demonstrated a significant association between POAG and cardiovascular mortality in four of the nine studies included (RR 1.20, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.43; p=0.05). 25 However, that review was limited to few studies and did not exclude the possibility that POAG is a part of the systemic vascular diseases that directly cause premature death.
