Deep biosphere and allochthonous sources of DNA Overall, microbial populations displayed an apparent trend reflecting the receding activity and slow death of microorganisms (Vuillemin et al . 2016 ) with a net decrease in cell abundance with depth (Fig. 2 ) during which the Bathyarchaeota and Chloroflexi became more abundant in the 16S datasets (Figs 3 and 5 ).
