Apart from the well-described effect of sickle cell trait on morbidity and mortality, epidemiological data on time-to-reinfection as a measure of infectivity under natural exposure in different transmission settings are also inconsistent, ranging from no effect of hemoglobin genotype on time to reinfection 12 to a nonsignificant trend of longer reinfection times in HbAS individuals 30 to a strong effect of increased time to reinfection. 31 , 32 Some of this discrepancy may be explained by characteristics of the sample and end points.
