One randomised controlled study demonstrated that the combination of such verbal suggestion methods with hyperventilation and photic stimulation in the presence of a doctor during a routine EEG may elicit seizures in 2/3 patients with suspected PNES whereas an EEG recording with the same activation procedures but without suggestion and without the presence of a doctor only captured seizures in 1/3 (in view of the small study size the between-group difference did not quite reach significance, p = 0.058).
