We previously conducted a cross-sectional molecular epidemiological study of benzene exposure in factory workers in China, in which we found decreased white blood cell (WBC) counts in workers occupationally exposed to < 1 ppm benzene compared with non-occupationally exposed controls, and a highly significant dose-response relationship [ 11 ] with no apparent threshold within the occupational exposure range (0.2 to 75 ppm benzene) [ 12 ].
