The ecological roles of anaerobic steroid degraders in natural environments may not be significant due to their low abundance ( 2 ); however, we have demonstrated that in communities, anaerobic steroid degraders do not share functional redundancy in degradation of side chains and sterane, supporting the paradigm that members of the rare biosphere serve as genetic reservoirs, exhibiting unique functional traits in biogeochemistry and bioremediation ( 49 ).
