An increasing trend in contact lens wear over the period of study 17 may have influenced the pattern of microbial pathogens isolated from corneal ulcers over time, away from gram-positive organisms (more often associated with ocular surface disease or prior ocular surgery) 1 toward contact lens-related pathogens (ie gram-negatives or Acanthamoeba sp.). 11 Also, increasing culture-positivity in summer months over the time period of the study may reflect seasonal trends in contact lens wear in the UK—further research is required to ascertain the impact of patients' contact lens use on seasonality of MK in the UK.
