The reasons behind the failures are many, but two of them may be significant: (i) current animal stroke models are mostly conducted using young animals, which inadequately reflects stroke in the aging populations and (ii) the major contributor (s) leading to brain ischemia-reperfusion injury have yet to be completely identified.
