In fact, when we compared the mean firing rate evoked by light activation of all these presumably ‘non-inhibitory’ spots to the mean baseline activity, we found that there was a small but highly significant reduction in firing rate (P = 2.6e-6, paired t-test, n = 216 spots, spot size 88 × 88 mμ, each spot value is the represented by the average of its ~20 repetitions, Fig. 2B ).
