The difference between X-string preview and identity preview conditions was significant at the pretarget word for both single fixation duration (difference of 8 ms) and gaze duration (difference of 21 ms) and marginally significant on first fixation duration (7 ms), while the difference between X-string previews and letter-string previews reached significance on gaze duration (difference of 17 ms) and was marginally significant on first fixation duration (difference of 8 ms; see Table 3 ).
