It is therefore unsurprising that previous global burden of depression studies appear to exclude NTDs from their prevalence and burden estimates [ 17 , 22 , 23 ] This omission is highly significant for two reasons: Many NTDs are uniquely stigmatizing [ 20 ], and collectively, WHO estimates that NTDs affect over 1 billion (or 1 in 6) people worldwide [ 1 ].
