Similarly, in a meta‐analysis of 34 bilateral internal thoracic artery (BITA) series and 27 000 BITA patients, we recently identified a highly significant BITA use‐to‐outcome relationship for long‐term survival and incidence of DSWI that was independent from the well‐known CABG volume/outcome effect. 78 These findings suggest that BITA grafting may be more technically demanding than the use of the single internal thoracic artery and that a volume/outcome relation can explain the marginally increased operative risk in the RITA arm.
