The parabrachial/Kolliker‐Fuse complex in the dorsal brainstem is known to have various modulatory effects on respiratory responses depending on the precise site of stimulation, including promotion of hyperpnea, inspiratory response, and apnea, (e.g., Chamberlin and Saper, 1994 39 ) and also to be important for locomotor‐respiratory entrainment, 40 which may be significant in the context of neuromodulation that is known to improve gait.
