At least two factors may be significant: (i) there was a difference in age at which the two ‘growers’ and ‘finishers’ began the feeing regime (4–5 weeks for the ‘growers’ and 20–21 weeks for the ‘finishers’), and (ii) unlike the ‘finishers’ the ‘growers’ underwent a 15 week ‘wash out’ period feeding on a conventional diet (without acorn supplement) 4 weeks of acorn supplementation, before slaughter.
