Although it is highly prevalent in children from urban areas, this is also an increasing trend in children from the rural areas. 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 According to Reddy et al., the national prevalence of overweight children is at 17% and obesity is at 5% among South African school children. 8 , 9 , 10 Several factors contribute to being overweight and obese including dietary intake, urbanisation, industrialisation and socioeconomic status of the family.
