Specifically, the lateral habenula appears to have a critical role in regulating oscillatory theta hippocampal activity through modulation of temporal dopaminergic and serotoninergic firing pattern, suggesting a synaptic mechanism for memory consolidation during REM sleep, a decrease in slow wave sleep, and a highly significant increase in REM sleep ( 16 , 28 ).
