An early case–control study of suicidal risk in 68 patients with various major affective disorder diagnoses and at least one suicide attempt, found a rate of suicides or attempts during 8.0 years of lithium treatment of 1.1%/year, with a highly significant increase to 2.0%/year following discontinuation of lithium treatment (Müller-Oerlinghausen et al. 1992 ).
