The progressive reduction and loss of the bony canal for the prootic sinus, and reduction of the lateral head vein are also an apparent trend in plesiomorphic members of both major therian clades, Eutheria and Metatheria (Figs 11a–11d and 12a–12d ; [ 12 , 28 , 69 ]).
