We assumed that there might be significant barriers for this patient group in Paraguay, considering the estimated national prevalence of blindness of 1.1% (95% CI 0.6–1.6) for people aged 50 years and older, a predominantly older population accessing the eye hospital, a high national prevalence of older people with psycho-social impairments and underdeveloped community-based mental health services [ 37 , 38 ].
