Many individuals with problematic substance use also have histories of abuse, crime, economic and social disadvantage, mental illness, and a lack of family and social support; thus, stigma is also a highly significant issue intersecting with and contributing to the harms associated with problematic substance use (Smye et al., 2011 ).
