expenditure.[ 4 ] For example, patients on PMV showed higher rates of hospital readmission, ICU readmission, and total health-care costs as well as higher rates of morbidity in a recent prospective study in Canada.[ 5 ] Analysis of The National Inpatient Sample data from the United States revealed an increasing trend for the need for palliative care in patients receiving PMV.[ 6 ] Therefore, the duration of mechanical ventilation seems to be an acceptable indicator of significant health complications as well as health-care costs.
