The findings countered initial expectations that aquacultures would be significant contributors to nitrogen pollution in the canals ( Ferreira et al., 2015 ).There is an apparent trend of reduced nitrogen pollution attenuation with intensification of the aquaculture practice, as would be expected from the reported fertilizer and feed inputs of the semi-intensive and intensive aquacultures, respectively ( Table 1 ).
