Consistent with this, we found that SPHK1 expression was positively correlated with Stromal-2 gene expression (calculated as the average expression across genes in the Stromal-2 signature [ 3 ] (Spearman correlation=0.46 and 0.47 for CHOP- and R-CHOP-treated patients, respectively; p<0.0001, not shown). However, when we repeated this analysis, this time using Stromal-1 signature genes [ 3 ], we were surprised to find that SPHK1 expression was even more highly correlated with Stromal-1 gene expression (Spearman correlation=0.80 and 0.77, respectively, p<0.0001) and included a highly significant overlap with all three angiogenic gene sets ( Figure 3b ; lower panel).
