8 In addition, differences in the sequence of covariate adjustments could be another reason for the differing findings; these 2 prior studies included certain patient variables in their baseline models before adding stage, whereas we included patient variables after adding stage to assess for the effect of stage alone. Nevertheless, in our final models, the effect of stage remained highly significant even after removing any possible confounding from age, suggesting that stage was an important factor for mortality independent of the other variables examined.
