Consequently, classic cigarette smoking among US adults has declined from 20.9% in 2005 to 15.5% in 2016, as shown in the National Health Interview Survey, while the proportion of those who quit smoking increased by almost 10% from 2005 to 2016.[ 4 ] However, while a significant decline in cigarette smoking has been reported in the majority of developed societies, the upsurge in electronic cigarettes use is a worrying trend, particularly due to the lack of longitudinal data on their safety and health effects.[ 4 ] Initially seen as a fancy object, electronic cigarettes have rapidly gained attention both as a tool aiding in tobacco smoking cessation and as a substitute for traditional tobacco addiction.
