3 This increase in the number of people with diabetes has led to an upsurge in the number of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those commencing renal replacement therapy (RRT), in combination with an overall trend of earlier commencement of dialysis. 4 The accelerating growth in patients with comorbid diabetes and CKD requiring RRT and the associated health and resource implications highlight the need for new directions in managing this high-risk population.
