Using flow cytometry, AZT caused a substantial, highly significant, and dose-dependent reduction in pCT transmission in E. coli ( Fig. 6c ); even the lowest concentration of AZT tested (0.008 μg/ml) resulted in a 52.4% reduction compared to LB alone ( P = 0.0067); 0.25 μg/ml AZT reduced transconjugants by 83.3% ± 4.9% of LB controls ( P < 0.0001).
